The material 1.4427SO, designated X12CrNiNoS18-11-2 and commercially known as AISI 316L(+S) or Z3CNDF17-13, is an austenitic stainless steel. Based on 1.4404 (316L), it has been optimised with the addition of sulphur and nitrogen to provide improved machinability and enhanced mechanical strength. Sulphur promotes better chip-breaking behaviour for efficient turning processes, while nitrogen increases yield strength and contributes to corrosion resistance. Typical applications include components for the chemical industry, plant and mechanical engineering, and medical technology, where both corrosion resistance and cost-efficient processing are required.
