The material 1.4305, designated X8CrNiS18-9 and commercially known as AISI 303 or Z8 CNF18-09, is an austenitic stainless steel. Due to its increased sulphur content, it offers significantly improved machinability compared to other austenitic grades, making it particularly suitable for turned parts requiring high processing efficiency. Its corrosion resistance is good but slightly lower than that of 1.4301 or 1.4404, which is why it is mainly used in less aggressive environments. Typical applications include fasteners, mechanical engineering components, screws, nuts, bolts and decorative parts, where cost-effectiveness and ease of machining are decisive factors.
