The material 1.4197, also designated as X20CrNiMoS13-1, Sandvik 4C27A or AISI 420F, is a martensitic stainless free-cutting steel alloyed with sulphur to enhance machinability. It combines good hardness and wear resistance with satisfactory corrosion resistance when hardened and passivated. Typical applications include precision turned parts, screws, shafts, surgical instruments, and mechanical components requiring both dimensional accuracy and high surface quality. The corrosion resistance is comparable to AISI 420, with the best performance achieved through hardening, polishing and passivation.
