The material 1.4034+S, designated X46Cr13 and commercially known as AISI 420 or Z44C14, is a martensitic stainless steel. With its higher carbon content, it provides very high hardness and wear resistance after hardening and tempering, while still maintaining good corrosion resistance in moderately aggressive environments. The intentional addition of sulphur significantly improves machinability, making 1.4034+S suitable for components requiring both high mechanical strength and efficient processing. Typical applications include cutting tools, surgical instruments, bearings, knives and technical parts where hardness, precision and corrosion resistance are essential.
