1.4016 - Ferritic stainless steel / X6Cr17 / AISI 430 / Z8C17 / S43000
Description
Material 1.4016 is a ferritic stainless steel according to EN 10088 with the EN designation X6Cr17 and the international equivalents AISI 430, UNS S43000 and AFNOR Z8C17. The material 1.4016 or X6Cr17 belongs to the group of ferritic chromium stainless steels and contains chromium as the principal alloying element in the range of 16.0 to 18.0 percent. The designations 1.4016, X6Cr17, AISI 430, UNS S43000 and Z8C17 are used in standards and material catalogues for this ferritic stainless steel.
The chemical composition of 1.4016 according to EN 10088 includes a maximum of 0.08 percent carbon, 16.0 to 18.0 percent chromium, a maximum of 1.0 percent silicon, a maximum of 1.0 percent manganese, a maximum of 0.040 percent phosphorus, a maximum of 0.015 percent sulphur and a maximum of 0.03 percent nitrogen. The chromium content enables the formation of a passive chromium oxide layer which provides the corrosion resistance of stainless steel. The material 1.4016, also designated AISI 430 and UNS S43000, has a ferritic microstructure and is magnetic.
The ferritic stainless steel 1.4016 or X6Cr17 is not hardenable by heat treatment. The material is used in the annealed condition. 1.4016 and AISI 430 show good formability and corrosion resistance in oxidising media. The material 1.4016, X6Cr17, AISI 430 and UNS S43000 is magnetic due to its ferritic microstructure.
Typical applications for material 1.4016, X6Cr17, AISI 430 and UNS S43000 include components for household appliances, visible panels and housings in domestic appliances, stainless steel kitchen sinks and kitchen equipment, decorative interior applications and trim components in the automotive industry.
